Once again Cranleigh endured a rather disappointing Halford Hewitt with a first round defeat to Rugby 3½-1½. Hopes were high following numerous trials including the new Sunningdale fixture but the OCs were comfortably outplayed on the day.
Marcus Ferguson-Jones and Frazer Moore secured the only full point, and it looked at one stage as if Tony Whitty and Craig Moore would keep the match alive but a couple of missed putts on 15 and 16 proved telling as they lost on the 18th. Luke Parry and Martin Riddiford took a half at fifth pair.
It was an encouraging debut appearance for the Moore brothers and it is hoped they will play key roles in future Hewitts.
A 2½-0½ victory over Highgate in the first round of the Plate offered some consolation but this was followed by a second round exit to Radley 2-1. Radley went on to win the Plate beating Edinburgh Ac in the final.
