Two Old Cranleighans will appear in next week’s Varsity match at Twickenham for the second time in three years. Winger Henry Lamont(East 2012), who is making his fourth appearance in the game, captains Oxford while Tom Stileman (Cubitt 2014) wins his first Blue on the other wing.
Lamont will become only the second OC to captain a side in the Varsity match, following on from HP ‘Jake’ Jacob in 1925. Lamont also surpasses Jacob’s Cranleigh record of three Varsity appearances; Jacob was due to turn out for a fourth time in 1926 but injured a knee ten days before the match. Had he played then he would have been in the same side at Maurice McCanlis who won two Blues. Both men went on to win international caps for England.
“This is a terrific achievement for both Tom and Henry,” said Andy Houston, Cranleigh’s director of rugby. “Both young men are exceptional role models for all pupils to be inspired by. They have worked so hard, both in and out of the classroom, to achieve their goals and as a School we are so proud.”
The Varsity match will be shown live on BBC on December 10 and we wish both players the very best of luck.
