ANGUS YOUNG – GBDURO20

Angus studied chemistry at Oxford and it was there that his love of cycling really grew, starting with triathlon and then bikepacking and ultra racing.  Now training to be a teacher he has spent much of his spare time travelling, often with a bicycle.

Ultra distance cycling is now his main passion.  GBDURO20 is an ultracycling event which crosses the UK from Land’s End to John O’Groats following a mixture of paved roads, gravel tracks and single track. Angus not only took part, but helped to organise this year’s event.

In a “normal” year the event takes place over four timed stages each around 500km with the rider with the lowest cumulative time over each stage “winning”. However in the light of COVID-19 the decision was made to change the event from a self-supported ride to a self-sufficient ride. This meant that the riders couldn’t use any services, accept help or go into any shops along the way. There should be no contact with anyone along the route. All riders had to take all the  food and supplies needed for the duration of the event, only being able to fill up with water from streams and outside taps – this meant carrying around 20kg of kit.

Having come 2nd in the GBDURO019, Angus was a favourite to win this year’s event and for the first four days he was well out in front, but then it began to rain …..  after 1000km and having pushed his body to the absolute limit Angus was hypothermic and forced to drop out.  Read more about his adventures on his blog
