In 1982 Steve Braham (East 1977), along with three other Cranleighans – Will Travers, Hugh Robinson and Dave Higgs – set off in a Land Rover to Africa on a journey that would change his life for ever . He never returned to the UK, but settled in South Africa where he married and had three children .
After time in Durban he settled in Johannesburg and worked as a sales manager and then a sports reporter for local radio before setting up SWB SPORTS & EVENTS which organises sports tours. “Through various sporting legends around the world I have built up a successful business mainly aimed at the UK and SA Market,” he said. “We specialise in hospitality and events for rugby and cricket.
“With the upcoming England cricket tour to South Africa taking place from December through to February, we will once again be looking after the English supporters in our hospitality suites as well as hosting various functions in Cape Town and Johannesburg.”
Steve played a lot of rugby in Johannesburg and has organised various rugby tours in southern Africa and internationally. With the British Lions scheduled to visit in 2021, he will be busier than ever, and will be hosting events with one of his 1982 travel companions, Will Travers. Will now runs the Born Free Foundation and the events will be raising money for the charity.
Steve always welcomes fellow Old Cranleighans and would be happy to assist with bookings for the cricket this year or for the rugby in 2021. He can also help to arrange complete tours of South Africa.
